Logician (GB)
gr/ro c Frankel – Scuffle (Daylami)
John Gosden
Logician was unraced as a juvenile, but unbeaten in five races as a three-year-old in 2019. He progressed rapidly, winning a Maiden contest at Newbury in May by an impressive two lengths, a Novice race at Newmarket in June despite losing a shoe mid-race, and a Handicap back at Newbury in July in an easy four-and-a-half length victory.
The handsome grey colt stepped up to Group company in August, where he stayed on strongly to land the Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes. Jockey Frankie Dettori remarked post-race: “There was still a bit of greenness, but he hit the line well and galloped out strongly. He’s not the finished article but with every race he’s improving, and he’s taken another leap forward."
It was on to Doncaster for the final Classic of the season, the Gr.1 St Leger, for which Logician started at 5/6 favourite. He fully justified favouritism, with an emphatic display in which he demonstrated a turn of foot not often seen over the St Leger distance. Logician broke the track record, prompting Timeform to describe him as “as exciting a three-year-old colt as there’s been this season… he has more than enough speed and class to drop back to one-and-a-half miles – a top-class prospect and the most exciting St Leger winner in recent years.”
Unfortunately, Logician suffered a serious infection over the winter, and it was a year before the colt was next seen on the racecourse. He made a winning return to action back at Doncaster in a 10-furlongs Conditions race, but on his next start at York found the soft going too much in the Gr.3 Cumberland Lodge.
Logician made his seasonal reappearance for 2021 at Newbury in the Gr.3 Aston Park Stakes, where he finished third.
