Lead Artist began his career in April of his three-year-old season, and was narrowly beaten into second place on his debut run over a mile at Newmarket. On his next racecourse outing, this time at York, he broke his maiden, powering clear of the field to win by four and three-quarter lengths.

His next run saw him earn his first blacktype, placing third in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket's July course on the 11th July. He followed this up a month later with smart performance at Goodwood to win the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes on fast ground. He went on to be runner-up to multiple Group 1 winner Kinross in the Park Stakes at Doncaster over seven furlongs in September before claiming another Group-level win in the Gr.3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket. This was his first attempt over a mile and he asserted himself well to beat the Cambridgeshire winner Liberty Lane by a length and a half.
