Item made a winning debut as a juvenile, running on well to score in a seven-furlong maiden at Kempton Park. Less than a month later, he backed this up with another win, this time over a mile in a Bath Novice race.

He made his first appearance as a three-year-old at York's Dante meeting in May. He forged ahead in the closing stages of the Gr.2 Dante Stakes to win by an impressive two and three quarter lengths, maintaining his unbeaten streak.

He bounced back from a disappointing run in the Gr.1 Derby at Epsom, run in testing conditions, to forge clear in the Gr.2 York Stakes dominating his elders with a two and three-quarter length victory.

Item headed to the Juddmonte International Stakes at York for his next appearance. He followed the strong pace set by Hawk Mountain at a sensible distance and kept with the advancing Almaqam in the final furlong before surging past in the final strides of the race to win by head.

Juddmonte's European Racing Manager, Barry Mahon, commented: "Once he got to the outside I was confident he was going to get there. He got a second wind and he hit the line well. He's a very good horse and he's done nothing wrong all year bar Epsom, where the ground was horrible. Colin felt he just got away with it today. He said he didn't feel like he was enjoying it."

He is the third foal out of Gr.1-winning Lope De Vega mare Capla Temptress and is a half-brother to Stakes-winning Kingman filly Temptable.
