Emollient (USA)
b f Empire Maker - Soothing Touch (Touch Gold)
Bill Mott
Emollient is unusual in that she is a homebred out of of a rare Juddmonte yearling purchase. Her dam Soothing Touch hails from a successful Niarchos-bred family and was bought for $550,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2005.
Emollient made her two-year-old debut with a second place in a Maiden Special Weight at Saratoga in early September 2012. Within a month of her debut she broke her maiden with a win at Belmont Park and went on to finish her season as runner up in the Gr.2 Demoiselle Stakes on dirt at Aqueduct.
Her three-year-old season saw her rack up three Grade 1 victories. The first was a nine-length demolition of her contemporaries in the Gr.1 Ashland Stakes on the Polytrack at Keeneland in early April. She then went on to take the Gr.1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park on her turf debut in July before tackling the Juddmonte sponsored Gr.1 Spinster Stakes in October. Taking on a field of older fillies and mares for the first time, Emollient was held up in last at Keeneland before unleashing a spectacular drive on the outside under Mike Smith. Her convincing one-and-a-quarter-length victory was the first time time Juddmonte had won the Spinster Stakes. In her final run of 2013, the Gr.1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, Emollient finished in fourth when she was headed a furlong out from the post.
As a four-year-old Emollient added a third place in the Gr.3 Doubledogdare Stakes and second place in the Gr.1 Gamely Stakes to her record at Keeneland and Santa Anita respectively. Her return to Santa Anita in September that year was a winning one. She battled back from being headed a furlong out to win the Gr.1 Rodeo Drive Stakes by half a length. Her final race of her career was another attempt at the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf but she finished down the field after clipping heels at the start of the straight.
