Bonny South ran twice as a juvenile, finishing fourth on debut before winning a Maiden Special Weight contest at Fair Grounds.

In February 2020, the Brad Cox-trained filly picked up an Allowance race at Oaklawn Park before returning to the scene of her first victory to contest the Gr.2 Fair Ground Oaks. Bonny South won the race by an easy two-and-a-half lengths, picking up 100 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks.

Stepping up in grade, she next ran fourth in the Gr.1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland, before running a good second to subsequent Gr.1 Kentucky Oaks and Gr.1 Preakness winner Swiss Skydriver in the Gr.1 Alabama Stakes at Saratoga.

Bonny South was second by a neck in the Gr.2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes in October and followed this at the end of November with second place in the Gr.2 Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs behind Envoutante, who was already a winner at graded level.

Keeneland was the scene for Bonny South's 2021 debut, and the now four-year-old filly prevailed in a three-way photo finish to win the Gr.3 Doubledogdare Stakes. Trainer Brad Cox spoke after the race about Bonny South's 2021 plans: "The Juddmonte Spinster would be a nice one to win. It would be one for the home team. The ultimate goal is the Breeders' Cup Distaff (Gr.1). Distance won't be a problem for her. We're just very proud of her today."

Bonny South then put together a number of placed runs in Gr.1 races. She was second in the Ogden Phipps Stakes and Personal Ensign Stakes and then third in the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes. Trainer Brad Cox confirmed after the Spinster Stakes that the Breeders' Cup Distaff remained an option for Bonny South.
