Surefire warms up for the Sydney Cup

Chris Waller-trained Surefire ran out a quarter of a length winner in the Gr.2 Chairman's Quality at Randwick on Saturday.

Taken from the ANZ Bloodstock News, 2nd April 2023:

Surefire produced the perfect dress rehearsal for next weekend’s Sydney Cup (Gr.1, 3200m) when he landed the Chairman’s Quality (Gr.2, 2600m) at Randwick on 1st April. Ridden by Joao Moreira, the son of Fastnet Rock bounced back from a disappointing ninth-place finish in the Australian Cup Prelude on 11th March, beating Gin Martini by a quarter of a length, while Nerve Not Verve was another long-neck away in third.

“He needed to turn his form around, he’s been a little bit plain the first couple of runs,” said Waller. “A bit of give in the track today has been a big help. At the 300-metre mark I thought we were home and then all of a sudden the challengers appeared, but the last 200 metres he held them off. No question, he’ll definitely be there [Sydney Cup] in seven days' time.”
