Latakia prevails in Deauville feature
Latakia (Frankel) made a blacktype breakthrough with a defeat of Le Combat Continue in this month's Listed Prix Luth Enchantee and confirmed form with that reopposing rival in Saturday's Gr.2 Prix Alec Head (formerly the Prix de Pomone) at Deauville.
Taken from the Thoroughbred Daily News, 24th August 2025, by Sean Cronin:
Settled behind the leaders in fourth for the most part, Latakia the 9-10 favourite, made headway under pressure in the straight to lead approaching the final furlong and was driven out late to assert superiority by two lengths for a career best.
"We have been patient with her, I kept her away from training for a long time and congratulations to the whole team in England and Ireland," said Francis Graffard. "She's a filly I've always liked and I'm very pleased. Christophe [Soumillon] said she travelled very nicely, the pace was strong and she quickened strongly. She's entered in the [Gr.1] Prix de
Royallieu [on Arc weekend], it's a logical entry and I will discuss plans with the team."
Latakia is the second of five foals and lone stakes performer from two winners thrown by Gr.2 Prix de la Nonette and Gr.3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Castellar, herself a half-sister to dual Group 1- winning sire Recoletos and the dual Group-placed Listed Prix de Thiberville victrix Ricla.
