Elite Power to retire to Juddmonte USA after the Breeders' Cup
Defending Eclipse Champion Elite Power, winner of the 2022 $2,000,000 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), will take up stud duty alongside Multiple Grade 1 winner Mandaloun (Into Mischief) upon retirement after competing in this year's 40th edition of the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1).
By Curlin, the Leading Sire of Grade 1 winners for the third year in a row, the striking chestnut colt sold as a yearling for $900,000 at the Keeneland September sale. He is out of Multiple Graded Stakes winner and Kentucky Oaks runner up Broadway's Alibi, who sold as a broodmare for $2.15 million. She hails from the family of Champion two-year-old filly Eliza.
Elite Power flashed his brilliance in his maiden win at Churchill, drawing off by nine lengths, clocking the final eighth of a mile in :11 and change while being geared down to the wire. The final time for the seven panels was 1:21 flat and was the start of an eight-race winning streak. His next win came in an allowance race, also at Churchill, going a mile where he drew off by 3 1/4 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:34 flat. His stakes debut came in the Grade 2 Vosburgh where he demolished the field, winning by five and three quarter widening lengths. In front of a crowd of 85,834 fans at Keeneland on Breeders' Cup day, Elite Power defined himself a Champion with a decisive victory in the Sprint (G1) against a packed field which included five-time Grade 1 winner Jackie's Warrior as well as Aloha West, the previous year's winner of the race.
Elite Power's 2023 campaign started in Saudi Arabia where he showcased his prowess against an international field, annexing the $1.5 million Riyadh Dirt Sprint (G3), leaving Gunite in his wake some 3 1/4 lengths back in second. Veteran jockey Frankie Dettori said after the race, "He's an aeroplane. He took my breath away." Back stateside for his next start, he easily won the True North (G2) in a hand ride. The True North (G2) was followed by the Grade 1 A.G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga. In a hard fought battle, against a worthy adversary in Gunite, Elite Power prevailed at the wire notching his eighth straight victory.
To date, the Juddmonte color bearer has amassed earnings of $2,735,711.
