Dual stakes success at Churchill Downs for Juddmonte

Juddmonte enjoyed two stakes victories on Saturday night at Churchill Downs, led by Conceit in the featured Gr.3 Dogwood Stakes and then followed by Consequent in the Listed Seneca Overnight Stakes.

Taken from the Thoroughbred Daily News, 20th/21st September 2026:

It was a thriller under the lights in the Gr.3 Dogwood Stakes, but Conceit came out as the ultimate beneficiary of the throwdown on the lead when she ran down the dueling leaders to win the photo. The betting public had to make a choice for this jump, and they gave her a 5-1 chance to beat a 1-5 favorite from the Bob Baffert barn who was building a winstreak. The field broke well with TDN Rising Star Explora stepping out to set the tempo through an opening quarter in :23.13 with fellow 'Rising Star' Movie Night glued to her flank. The pair rolled through a half-mile in :45.12 while Conceit watched the action unfold from well off that pace in fourth.

Swinging four-wide turning for home, the top two were still locked in battle, but the Juddmonte colour-bearer was building up a full head of steam and had become the looming danger deep in the stretch. Closing the gap with every stride, Conceit overhauled Explora and Movie Night in the shadow of the wire. The former bravely held on to second while the latter had to settle for third.

Conceit's trainer brad Cox commented: "She's a lightly raced filly and starting to really figure things out on the dirt. We know she tries hard and was going to come with a big run. We're very thankful for Juddmonte for sending us another talented homebred of theirs and the future is very bright."

Later in the card, in the Listed Seneca Overnight Stakes, Consequent was content to watch early as the leader Woodstock posted a moderate opening quarter in :24.16 and a half in :48.22. She found herself at the front of the pack shortly after when the pacesetter quickly began fading along the rail going into the turn, and In Total Awe ranged up on her outside to keep her company midway along the bend. Briefly swamped as the closers made their moves turning for home, Consequent cut the corner to reclaim some ground on the trio of challengers, and had plenty left in the tank when asked to kick away. Putting open lengths on Answered Prayers in deep stretch, she strolled in a comfortable winner. A.P.'s Girl came on late to claim third.

Hailing from the female family that produced multiple Gr.1 winner Dream Rush, her daughter Gr.1 winner Dreaming of Julia, and her sensational granddaughter, two-time Eclipse champion and mulitple Gr.1 winner Malathaat, Consequent is the latest blacktype winning filly in a powerhouse filly family. She is the third offspring for her dam to reach the stakes level behind full sister Show Card and half-sister Whitethorn.
