Blue Bolt flashes home for electric Gr.1 Matron win

A good day for Juddmonte at the Irish Champions Festival continued when Blue Bolt secured her third Group 1 and fifth consecutive win in the Matron Stakes for trainer Andrew Balding and retained rider Colin Keane on Saturday.

The race panned out smoothly for the favourite, as Carolina Jetstream was sent to the lead under David Egan, who set sensible fractions with last year’s winner Fallen Angel for company. Keane always looked happy on the winner, who raced economically behind the leaders. Fallen Angel led them into the straight, with James Doyle asking her to quicken from the front. Blue Bolt tracked her and quickened up in devastating fashion. Setting sail for home, she hit the front outside the final furlong and the result never looked in doubt. City Of Memphis ran a career best to take second after switching inside and staying on well to finish two and a quarter lengths behind her accomplished rival. Fallen Angel, to her credit, looked booked to be an also-ran but stuck her neck out gamely to steal third from Duckadilly by a short head, a length and a quarter behind City Of Memphis.

Keane was enjoying his second winner on the card and spoke to Racing TV post-race: “She lengthens and gallops and she makes it hard for them to pass her. It was a good and even tempo, they could have gone quicker if they wanted. My filly travels strongly, that’s what she does but when you get her into top gear she’s a bit relentless. It worked out nice. The further she goes, the better she goes. I’m sure if they wanted to, not that they need to, she would go further, but she is very good at a mile. She has progressed in leaps and bounds from run to run this year.”

The winner has blossomed into a top-class miler this season, having hinted at the level of her ability as a three-year-old last year when taking the Listed Distaff and finishing second in the Gr.3 Atalanta Stakes and Gr.1 Sun Chariot Stakes. The four-year-old, who was unraced at two, has been flawless in five starts this season, beginning with Listed glory at Goodwood in May and continuing at Royal Ascot in the Gr.2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes. She began her hat-trick of Gr.1s in the Falmouth Stakes and took in the Gr.1 Prix Rothschild en route to this classy performance.
